Voting For Candidates Based on Looks 2011
*Disclaimer: this is meant as a bit of fun. You should probably not actually base your vote on how the party leader looks.
So I watched the leadership debate last night after an exhausting trip to Great Wolf Lodge. The candidates gathered in a circular set, awkwardly coloured in oranges, greys and blacks, and bickered relentlessly offering little of substance. Many a media organization is racing to offer you, the voter, an in depth analysis of the exchange, but only here will you get a guide to voting for the candidates based on their looks.
Gilles Duceppe. I may not agree with all his separatist ideals, and I can't vote for him anyway, but I have to admire this guy's sense of style. His tie print featured either butterflies or flowers, wonderfully complimenting his pinstripe suit. Compared to the other fellas drab ensembles, Gilles came across positively flamboyant. Perhaps this is a Quebecois thing? Of course, as always his pointed ears and piercing eyes make him look like a vampire (not Edward Cullen or Bella Lugosi, more like Nosferatu).
Stephen Harper. In the first voting based on looks post, I compared Steve to an aging ken doll. I suspect he is actually an android. His hair never moves and skin is unblemished and shiny, particularly his lips. Also his hand gestures remind me of the animatronics at Disneyland. The debate began with a one-on-one exchange between Nosferatu and the robot. Pointless, yes. Hilarious, mildly.
Jack Layton. What a trooper this guy is! He has cancer, has lost a bunch of weight and is walking with a cane. Not only does he not let it get him down, but he actually made a joke about it, saying how he would have to lend Harper his crutch to stay in power. Zinga! Did anyone else notice that Jack's skin is the exact same orange as the set backdrop?
Micheal Ignatieff. I think he's gotten greyer since he took over the liberal party. Maybe this was on purpose, because for some reason it makes him look friendlier. He's trying really hard not to seem like a slimey car salesman and I give him props for that. He's also the only leader who wore a tie that matched his party's colours and the one with the bushiest eyebrows. When Jack and Mike go at it I keep wanting to yell at them to kiss and make up. If they joined forces they could do some serious robot butt-kicking!
Elizabeth May. She wasn't there, and she's hopping mad!
If, for some reason, you need more than just looks to decide on who to vote for, the CBC has this nifty little tool. You put in your stance on certain issues, and it tells you which party's views are most similar to yours. It didn't really tell me much that I didn't already know but it makes the decision process into a fun quiz game! Incidentally, I think I'm probably going to vote Liberal.

I'm up for an award (again)
And this time you can help me win! I submitted the first chapter of my book, tentatively entitled "wardroids" to Creative Arts Burlington for their first annual arts recognition awards. Unfortunately, there's nowhere where you can actually read my submission, or look at any of the other submissions in any of the categories. You'll just have to trust that it is as brilliant as this blog...and anything else you may have read of mine.
There are three nominees in the litery arts category: Jennifer Filipowicz (that's me), Bobbie Smith (some random person), and Sylvia McNicoll. That's right, Sylvia McNicoll. Ever since I was in her womb she's been trying to steal my thunder. This is sure to split the family and friend vote, leaving Bobbie poised to grab my prize!
Don't let it happen! Vote here. You can vote online or print out a ballot to send it (although why you would go to the trouble of finding a stamp when you're already at the website is completely baffling to me). There are also links to everyone's website, but ignore those and just trust that I'm the best. Don't bother with the other categories either, just type in your e-mail and click the little round button thing beside my name and click "vote." Yeah, it's pretty straight forward.
Edit: It looks like Creative Burlington has now put our bios up. And there's links to writing samples. Although my link just says "sample coming soon". I'm not sure why they didn't just put everything up at the same time, but it's their first year doing this so maybe next year they'll be more on the ball.

Vote for us
Remember this video:
Well it's time to vote for us! You have to put in your information and stuff, but that's only because you have a chance to win a prize too! If we win, we get $10 000 in travel vouchers; and if you win, you get some Johnson and Johnson stuff (always useful). I wouldn't bother looking at any of the other videos BTW; none of them has me in it.

My vote didn't count (as usual)
The Conservatives won again. They even won in my riding. Again my faith in the intelligence of the average Canadian has been shattered. First a brief history of the Conservative Party:
Back when they were losing... they were called the Canadian Conservative Reform Alliance Party (or CCRAP). They changed their name to the villainous-sounding "The Alliance" to avoid the unfortunate innitials, and began touring the country promoting "family values" which is right-wing code for anti-gay, anti-feminist.
There was of course also the Progressive Conservative party, a more middleground conservative group. They won only 12 percent of the vote in the 2000, with the crappy Alliance winning 66. These two parties merged to form today's Conservative Party (they were forced to remove "progressive" from their name because the Alliance is anything but).
Now they've won their second minority government in a row. This last election called prematurely, breaking new laws that the Conservatives themselves came up with. Come on people!
If you voted Conservative, fine, not everyone has to have the same opinion as me. If you didn't vote at all (and this time that makes up nearly half of the population) shame on you! It's YOUR fault that we have crap running our country.
